Colin Cowherd: Knicks Are Not a Great 'Team', They're a Great 'Story'

Watch Colin Cowherd of FS1’s The Herd discuss the 2-2 Eastern Conference semifinals series between the Indiana Pacers and the New York Knicks and explain why it’s becoming apparently obvious that the Knicks are more of a compelling underdog ‘story’ than a dynamic title-contending 'team'.

Check out the segment above as Colin details the flaws of the Knicks and why their style of play is not sustainable.

Colin Cowherd: “The Knicks are missing all sorts of players, but there is something to be said that hustle is important, and toughness and intensity – they really, really matter. The Knicks have a lot of that but those minutes add up. We kept saying ‘when is the dam going to break?’ How long can you be led by a ball-dominant point guard who is playing virtually all the minutes? How long can Josh Hart play with this much ‘heart’ and produce double his career averages? At some point – when does it end? That game yesterday wasn’t even competitive.
I don’t even think Knicks fans think they’re a great ‘team'. They’re a great ‘story’ and they have a lot of heart, but you need talent and skill. The Eastern Conference is BAD, and this is about as bad as it’s ever been. Then you add on the fact players like Dame and Giannis were hurt. They scraped and clawed their way to a couple wins, but when your scoring comes almost all from a ball-dominant point guard – I've seen it with Dame in Portland, I’ve seen it with Westbrook teams, I’ve seen it with Harden teams... The Warriors [dynasty] never got into that ball-dominant stuff, it was always about moving the pieces, so it didn’t wear down Steph Curry. There were other scorers. Brunson was averaging 35 points in the playoffs with the number one usage rate and you just kept asking ‘how long?’ It’s not being a ‘hater’ to say ‘this thing doesn’t feel like it’s sustainable’, it’s being realistic.
The good news is it looks like they’re really well-run, they actually have a culture, they play hard, and they’ve got to be very careful when they get the next star that they don’t give up too many pieces. You can work really, really hard as a basketball team but at some point skill and talent takes over, and the Knicks don’t have a ton of it, but they’re well-run, got a culture, they fight like hell, they’re fun to watch, and they’re easy to root for.”
