10. Kings— De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, Keegan Murray
“They led the NBA in offense. Sabonis is a rebounder and kind of limited. Murray is not yet a great player, but Fox is obviously the best.”
9. Cavaliers— Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Evan Mobley
“Mobley is a ‘good’ player, he’s not yet ‘great’, so I put them at nine. They were the number one scoring defense and lowest field goal percentage allowed. By next year Mobley is going to emerge as a 20+ point per-game big.”
8. 76ers— Joel Embiid, James Harden, Tyrese Maxey
“Harden plays no defense, but Tyrese Maxey is ascending to star power. Embiid and Harden are one of the better pick-and-roll duos in the league. Harden led the league in assists.”
7. Lakers— LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves
“LeBron at 38 years old is the only guy to average 25-8-6 on at least 50% shooting, so he’s still a remarkably efficient player. AD was the best defensive player in the playoffs. Reaves should be your 4 or 5 starter, and he’s not really a classic point guard or shooting guard so that’s why I only put them seven.”
6. Warriors— Steph Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green
“Steph, Klay, and Draymond led the NBA in catch-and-shoot scoring. They made the most threes, second-highest three-point percentage. Played together, high IQ, great culture.”
5. Heat— Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro
“Miami is much better defensively [than Golden State]. Jimmy and Bam are elite defenders. Herro, who was kind of squirrelly a couple years ago, gives you 20 points a game, and they’ve reached the Finals in two of the last four years.”
4. Bucks— Giannis, Khris Middleton, Jrue Holiday
“Khris Middleton has been banged up and I think he’s peaked. Giannis and Jrue Holiday are the best two-way duo in the league. I worry about Middleton’s health.”
3. Celtics— Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart
“They don’t have a ring. I’ve never thought of Smart as a great facilitator but the last four years he’s averaged more assists every year and this year he averaged a career-high 6.5. These guys led the NBA in net rating.”
2. Suns— Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Bradley Beal
“Offensively this is the best trio. They were the highest percentage shooting team in the playoffs, and they added Bradley Beal. These are three great shooters and Beal has the ability to facilitate. He’s not a classic point but he can do some of it.”
1. Nuggets— Nikola Jokic, Jamal Murray, Aaron Gordon
“Got to go with the Nuggets mostly because of the way they fit. Jokic makes everybody better, Gordon is an elite, long defender, and Murray is your classic shooting guard. Where the Suns may not fit perfectly, they Nuggets fit perfectly.”
