Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo has agreed to a three-year, $186 million contract extension, his agent, Alex Saratsis confirmed to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski Monday (October 23) night.
The new deal includes a player option for the 2027-28 season, which will extend through the duration of recently acquired fellow All-Star Damian Lillard's current contract, which ends with the possibility of Lillard testing free agency in 2015. Antetokounmpo, 28, initially announced the extension on social media earlier on Monday.
The two-time NBA MVP had previously signed a five-year, $228.2 million supermax contract in 2020, which would've kept him signed through the 2024-25 season prior to Monday's extension. In August, Antetokounmpo said he wasn't willing to sign an extension until he had confirmation that all parties involved were on the same page several months after being upset by the Miami Heat in the first-round of the 2023 NBA Playoffs, as well as the firing of former head coach Mike Budenholzer this offseason.
"I would not be the best version of myself if I don't know that everybody's on the same page, everybody's going for a championship, everybody's going to sacrifice time away from their family like I do," Antetokounmpo said via Yahoo Sports. "And if I don't feel that, I'm not signing."
Milwaukee has since traded for Lillard, pairing Antetokounmpo with a fellow perennial All-Star, solidifying the franchise's plans to build around the Greek superstar. Antetokounmpo averaged 31.1 points, 11.8 rebounds and 5.7 assists during the 2022-23 NBA season.
